The Key Essential to Moving A Small Business Forward ...

I love to give a helping hand to those who are struggling with moving a small business forward, and that’s why I’ve created The Reality Check.

It’s a four-part mini audio series which I’ve recorded especially for small business owners who want to take stock of where their business is at and realign it with their original goals.

I know that we all have busy lives, so I’m not expecting anybody to incorporate a whole podcast episode into their listening schedule.

Each episode is under five minutes long as I’ve condensed my knowledge and expertise down into this mini-series to make sure you can easily listen and assess exactly where your business is at.

Table of Contents

Finding your Why:

A key element of The Reality Check is helping business owners to assess how well their current business operations align with their original vision: their Why – and this is the topic of episode one of The Reality Check.

Before moving a small business forward, some will need to stop and think about what their Why is, and why they began their business in the first place.

Your Why should be the reason that your business functions, and the thing which underpins everything you do.

The problem of your Why …

Difficulties often arise in businesses when we lose sight of our Why. It’s very hard to keep going when the vision we’re inspired by is no longer at the centre of what we’re doing.

Episode two of The Reality Check focuses on how to tell whether your Why has slipped off the radar, and if so, what to do about it.

Enhancing your Why:

It can be hard to think about moving a small business forward if you feel like the situation your company is in has shifted.

That’s why episode three of The Reality Check is all about Enhancing your Why by evolving your business purpose to keep things moving.

This doesn’t mean completely changing your Why, but instead adapting it to better suit the vision of your business as it grows.

Final episode: The Drive

In our fourth and final episode, we address the key to moving a small business forward: the Drive.

Hopefully by now we’re realised that as much as things like strategy, resources and execution matter, your Why is the thing that will keep your business going.

People don’t just buy the product that you sell, they’re also buying the reason that you’re selling it; that’s the power of your Why.

When your Why is clear, it becomes the engine that pushes forward your culture and customer relationships.

It’ll keep you going through market shifts, give you resilience in the face of setbacks and be the story which attracts customers.

However, there’s another concept which is absolutely essential, and that’s Drive.

Even if all your business operations at every level are aligned with your Why, your business won’t have any impact unless you have the drive behind it to succeed.

So, take a minute to ask yourself, ‘what is the true engine behind my business’?

Do I want to create change? Solve a problem? Empower others? Build a legacy?

These examples of Whys are great insights into how you might refine your Why, giving a stronger Drive to push your business onwards as you reflect on what you’re passionate about.

Moving a small business forward is all about being ready for change; challenges will come and competition will grow, but your Why and your Drive will always be your greatest strengths.

Your Why and your Drive: how they interact

When you see how your Why and your Drive interact, you’ll realise that they’re in a reciprocal relationship; each of them pushes the other one forward.

Firstly, your Drive allows you to keep your Why alive.

Without the energy and proactivity to push your company into its future, it won’t ever reach its goals. That’s why your Drive is essential for your Why.

But it works the other way around too; if you don’t have a clear Why, your sense of purpose will dwindle, and with it your Drive to move forward will fade away too as you forget why you began.

You need both a Why and Drive to keep moving a small business forward, and it’s a bit like driving a car.

If your Why is the car, the Drive is the fuel. If you have a car with no fuel, it’s never getting anywhere – but fuel with no car to go in doesn’t have much purpose either.

Are you trying to keep moving a small business forward? The Reality Check is for you!

If you’re ready to re-engage with your Why, bring it to the centre of your business, enhance it where needed and fuel your Drive, you’re in the right place.
